Inbooklet in-trouble

Gang,

When you produce a document in InDesign with printer spreads and have objects that spread across two pages, make sure you DON"T use the Create a New Document feature because it will surprise you at printing. Just preview your document and use the print button. The only constraint is that you won't have much control over cropping marks.

Domain transfer easy explanation from godaddy

As I stumbled through the Internet looking for concise information that's easy to read I came across this handy pdf. I'm putting this here so I can save myself the half hour when I have to find this 6 months from now. The thing is I'l probably forget which blog I put it on.

Go to godaddy's Help Guide page and click on the 2nd link under Domains, Transferring Domains to Your Account and a pdf will start to download.

D-Photoshop-Smart Objects

This is a time-saver for sure!
When you use photoshop for a layout that sources multiple images place it as a Smart Object. The Smart Object layer automatically saves it's name as the original file name you imported. This is super-duper, ultra handy when the low resolution file is approved and a high-resolution needs to be made.

Photoshop - Rescue your original even after you save over it in Photoshop (7/CS/CS2)

Tip: Rescue your original even after you save over it in Photoshop
(7/CS/CS2)
Have you ever made changes to an original image and then accidentally saved over it without making a backup copy? Well, if this sounds vaguely familiar, then we have some good news for future accidents. To recover your original image, go to the History palette, and click on the opening snapshot to make it active. Next, click the Create New Document From Current State button at the bottom of the palette. Upon doing so, your original image displays in a new document. Choose File > Save. Now, go back to the History palette and click on the last History State listed in the History palette. At this point, it's a good idea to save your file with a different name to ensure the safety of the original file.

Break Frame - InDesign

Friends,

Ever got frustrated by trying to break the link between two threaded text boxes in indesign? The only option you had was to delete the link between the two and then cut whatever hidden text and paste it in the other box.

With the break frame script you can do all of this in just one click. Simply save the attached file to your scripts folder under presets in the main InDesign folder and use it when you need it. A very, very cool plug in.

Enjoy.

Macworld says recent Mac OS update, 10.4.8, gives notable speed bump to Photoshop on Intel Macs

Friday, November 17, 2006 | by Eamon Hickey

Macworld reports that Apple's recent Mac OS 10.4.8 update has boosted the speed of Photoshop CS2 by 34-36% on some Intel-based Macs. Photoshop CS2 is not yet a universal binary application, meaning it must run under the Rosetta emulation mode on Intel-based Macs.

With the previous version of the Mac OS, 10.4.7, Photoshop CS2 ran Macworld's testing suite significantly sl ower on Intel-based Macs than it did on comparable Power PC-based Macs. But OS 10.4.8 has brought Intel-based Mac Photoshop performance within easy shouting distance of Power PC speeds, according to Macworld's tests. Speeds increased by 36% for the Mac Pro Quad Xeon/2.66GHz and by 34% for the 15-inch MacBook Pro Core Duo/2.16GHz.

Microsoft Word, which also is not yet a universal binary application, is also faster with OS 10.4.8, but the speed increase is more modest -- 3-12% depending on the specific Mac model tested.

Type-size Shortcuts
To change type size and leading incrementally, start by
setting increment size (Preferences > Units & Increments).
In your document, use Shift-Command/Ctrl- < to decrease
the point size of selected type by one increment, and
Shift-Command/Ctrl- > to increase the point size. Add the
Option/Alt key to these combinations to multiply the
increment by five. You can change leading via
Option/Alt-Up and Option/Alt-Down arrow key combinations.

ACE - Photoshop CS2 Expert

By the time I figure this out and do it CS16 will be released but I'm tired of thinking about it. I'm going to do it. The first step is looking at the Exam Guide.
I think I'll skim through it and then try the $25 sample test at TrainStation. I tried the 10-question online test and got 7 out of 10, I'm on my way!

Here's a couple of free sample courses from my (sarcasm on) favourite publisher Element K aka Eli Journals (sarcasm off).

What is phishing?

Stay secure online. What is phishing?

Have you ever received an e-mail saying that you are eligible to receive a
tax refund or that you qualify for a $ 200,000 mortgage without even
applying for it? Also, in this type of e-mail you would be asked to login to
your bank account or give your credit card number. This practice is called
“phishing” and we are not talking about 13 lb salmon here.

"Phishing" is when online crooks send out emails attempting to fool you
into sharing personal information like passwords or credit card numbers. Why
do they call it phishing? Because these people are hoping to "fish out"
your personal information. These people pretend to be from an organization
or company that you trust. It can be from the bank you have an account with
or the online store that you shop from time to time.

They normally use scare tactics, and will tell you that your account has
been suspended or that your credit card was fraudulently used. Do not
believe it, even though it looks real. Your bank would never ask you to send
them your personal information by e-mail. If you have any concerns it’s
better to call your bank and ask.

Simple rules to follow:

If you receive a suspicious message delete the email and don't reply.
Protect your computer by installing an anti-spam software.

Never give out your personal information via e-mail. Even if it was an
e-mail from your friend, confirm first.

Review your credit card statements.

Found Japanese art

Kosuke Ikeda is his name and graphic art is his game. These are my five favourites. I originally ran across these beautiful pieces of art in July when a co-worker was looking at some art galleries online. It was the tree drawing that caught my eye as I was walking by Nathan's computer, so I asked him to email me the link.

When I got home later that day I started to search for the artist's website. If you visit the link you'll notice that it's all in Japanese. I took a look around and found some more pieces that I downloaded and then I emailed the artist asking him where I can purchase prints of his fine artwork.

It turns out he has a distributor in Portland, Oregon, justbedesign.com, aka Compound Gallery. When I looked at their website I couldn't find Kosuke's name or any of his art.

Then I got distracted by my life and summer and the all the other stuff. But this has been in the back of my mind since July, I think I need to do something about it. So I guess I'll send an email to Compound Gallery asking if there's any prints and how much I can get them for. I'll keep you posted.

iTunes movies, not in Canada

While we, in Canada, are still waiting for TV and various other videos to be available for purchase, Apple has announced that the US now can purchase movies for $14.99. After reading various comments, I tend to agree with those who say they'd rather buy the DVD for $5 more and get the extra features plus be able to watch the movie on their TV and not just on their computer or iPod. But that's all moot since the service isn't available in Canada anyway and it looks it won't be for a couple of years.
All we have to justify the video feature on our video iPods is the Music Video section. Not really much insentive, is it? Unless you've been anxiously waiting for the latest JT video to be available so you can sit on the bus watching it over and over and over again. Hmmmmm....

CSS is the way of the future.

I love the idea of this. I love that a visitor to your website can click a button to see your content the way he or she prefers. The message gets to the people much better when they're looking at it in a format that's pleasing to their eyes.
I want to learn the intricacies of this amazing feature. I'm going to start here and keep you posted.

need help

We're having a hard time finding someone to help a small graphic design dept. of an up-and-coming social marketing company in Vancouver. A certain someone who has reliably serviced the Apple computer and it's software in the graphic arts community for the last 20 years has left us high and dry.
A quick google search has left me with two links, MW Consulting in North Vancouver and Mac Service Centre in Port Moody. I'm going to contact these companies this week. I'll post my findings here.
